How many times have you thought to yourself, “My vacuum cleaner smells? How can I get the odor out?”

Considering a vacuum cleaner is designed to clean up dirt, which causes odors, it probably does smell. No need to be alarmed, there is a way to get the smell out.

However, before I address this question with an answer, let’s first look at some of what a vacuum cleaner sucks up that causes the odors in the first place.

One of the primary factors, or causes for a vacuum cleaner to smell is the pores in the bag are getting clogged not allowing air to pass.

You may think dirt is the culprit here which it is in part true, but in fact a huge factor is those deodorizing powders you put in your carpet to make it smell better. (There are better ways to make your carpet smell clean).

When you sprinkle all that powdered deodorizer on your carpet and then vacuum it up, it clogs the pores faster than dirt. Therefore, the clogged vacuum bag does not allow the air to pass through. Air should be allowed to pass through the bag then through a HEPA filter which filters the particles out therefore reducing odors.

Other things your vacuum cleaner ingests are things like pet hair and dander, bits of paper, food crumbs and yes, paper clips and potato chips. All of these can contribute to your vacuum bag filling and becoming stopped up not allowing the air to pass through.

-So How Do I Get the Smell Out-

All this being said, just how do you get the smell out of my vacuum cleaners? Change the bag. It amazes me how many people will let the bag over fill without changing it. There is absolutely no reason to allow a vacuum bag to fill beyond its functionality.

This is also one cause for your vacuum cleaner to shut off for no apparent reason. Most commercial vacuums have a bag fill limit and shut it down before it gets over filled. Again, change the bag.

Like any other piece of equipment you have to perform regular maintenance in order to keep it running at peak performance. For a vacuum cleaner this means you have to change the bag once-in-a-while, clean it up, and use an odor eliminating product. Results, reduced vacuum cleaner smell.
