How to Brighten Vinyl Windows That Have Dulled

Windows with vinyl frames have become standard in new construction due to their easy maintenance and durability. Despite this, these frames can dull over time, giving even the most well-maintained home a dingy, older appearance. The easiest way to brighten vinyl windows is to clean them; however, if you let the dirt collect for several years, you may need to paint over the vinyl for the best results.

Cleaning the Frames Vinegar is the easiest, cheapest way to brighten vinyl windows.
1
Mix three parts distilled white vinegar to seven parts water in a spray bottle. If the scent of vinegar is too overpowering, add the juice of one or two lemons to mellow it a little. You can also use a non-abrasive household cleaner to brighten vinyl windows, including glass cleaner or just about any all-purpose product. Do not use anything that contains bleach, acetone or abrasives, however, as these can damage the window frame.
2
Spray the vinyl window with the vinegar solution or cleaner and let it sit for several minutes. Spray it lightly again and then use a soft scrub brush to gently clean the frame. Work in circular motions, reapplying the diluted vinegar or cleaner as needed until the frame is dirt-free and bright.
3
Wipe the frame down with a damp cloth to remove any excess vinegar solution or cleaner. If you plan to paint the frame, use lint-free cloth and let the frame air-dry before proceeding.

Painting the Frames When all else fails, paint gives new life to dingy vinyl windows.
1
Tape off the window frame with painter's tape and cover the glass with plastic to protect it.
2
Remove any dust or dirt with a hairdryer after cleaning the window frame. Painting over dust will lead to uneven results and premature chipping or peeling, especially when painting vinyl.
3
Apply a thin coat of exterior, vinyl-safe paint with added primer in a color of your choice to the entire window frame using a small brush. If you are painting an upper-level window, use a ladder to reach it as a friend or family member holds the ladder steady. Let the paint dry.
4
Apply a second coat to the frame and allow this to dry as well. Remove the painter's tape and the plastic from the glass. Repeat this process with each additional window. During the project, make sure that you clean the window frame immediately before you paint it. Cleaning every frame and then going back to paint them leaves more time for dust and dirt to collect on the frames.
