WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOUR VACUUM COULD RUIN YOUR CARPET

You did your research and were thoughtful in selecting the beautiful carpet that covers the floors in your home. But, if you intend on pushing around the same old vacuum to clean it, you could be putting all of that time, money, and effort to waste. If you want to keep your home looking great and extend the life of your carpet (and its warranty), now’s the time to pair your new carpet with the perfect vacuum cleaner.

Since regular vacuuming is essential to proper carpet maintenance, it’s important to understand why certain vacuums work better than others on different types of carpet– especially if your carpet is super soft. When you’re looking at machines with different wheel sizes, special tools, and options for adjusting height, fan speed and beater bar rotation, you’ll want to make your selection based on your carpet’s fiber type and construction.

For high pile, wool or wool-blend, and premium soft carpets, you’ll need a vacuum with large wheels and a height adjustment setting to allow for maximum clearance. Avoid vacuums with super-concentrated suction.

The added number of soft fibers in premium carpets can make some vacuums hard to push around. And, many vacuum manufacturers are putting out models with extremely high suction power. While that might be great for low pile carpets and hard surfaces, it’s not such a good match for thicker, high pile carpets.

Adjust your vacuum to the proper height setting to insure that the beater bar or brush just lightly touches your carpet surface. Setting it too high above the surface will not allow the vacuum to be effective, and if the setting is too low, the rotating brush can “fuzz” the fibers and cause your carpet to look frayed.

For “shag,” casual frieze, and thick loop carpets, sometimes it’s necessary to disengage yoru vacuum’s beater bar and use suction only, so make sure to find a machine with this capability.

For all other carpet types, it’s safe to use a vacuum with a beater bar or rotating brush. Check the beater bar regularly for damages that may harm the surface of your carpet, and change the bag or empty the canister often.

There’s no better feeling than resting your bare feet in the comfort of your warm, premium carpet, and choosing the right vacuum can help you maintain that cherished feeling for years to come. So, be sure to look over the recommended care and warranty information associated with your carpet before you buy a new one.
