11 Spots You're Forgetting to Vacuum

When it comes to cleaning the nooks and crannies of your home, look no further than the trusty vacuum. It's the most versatile cleaning tool you have in the house. Put those fancy attachments to work because dirt-free floors are only the beginning.

1. Blinds and shades
Your vacuum is the handiest way to clear dust from window coverings. And it doesn't discriminate — from honeycombs to insulating blinds, the vacuum can help refresh them all.

2. Windowsills
And while you're over there, run the soft brush over the sills to pick up dust and dirt.

3. Mattress
When it's time to flip your mattress, use the opportunity to eliminate any dust that has accumulated. The upholstery attachment (the one with the wide horizontal mouth) works well on the top, sides, and box spring, and also easily cleans the quilted crevices.

4. Foam Pillows
They can't go in the washing machine, but that doesn't mean you can't clean them. On a low suction level, go over both sides of the pillow to remove trapped dust (and always pay attention to your pillow's care tag).

5. Fridge Coils
Use the crevice tool (the long, skinny one) to clean dusty coils at least once a season. If you neglect them, your fridge might need to work a bit harder (and use more energy) to keep the temperature cool.

6. Keyboard
If you spend time snacking while you surf (the Internet, that is), your vacuum is a handy way to clean out the cracks between keys.

7. Speakers
Forte uses the soft brush to dust around her media room, making sure her entertainment center is free of debris. Vacuum dust around cords and electronics to keep it from infiltrating your outlets.

8. Drawers
Here is Forte's trick for cleaning out cabinets and drawers: Stretch a stocking over the nozzle of the hose to vacuum up dust without accidently sucking up a sleeve or sock in the process.

9. Heating ducts and air conditioning vents
Don't let these air circulators blow dust through your home. Forte advises using the soft brush (the one with the bristles) to keep these spaces clean.

10. Brooms
Don't forget to clean your cleaners! Use a handheld attachment to rid broom bristles of dust, dirt, and hair so that it can get the job done.

11. Dryer lint chamber
Even if you're diligent about clearing the lint trap after each load, lint will still accumlate in your dryer over time. Your machine will work less efficiently if it's clogged and, even worse, trapped lint is a major fire hazard.
